A Condensed History of Photography in Three Lectures
Lecture 1: Pre-photography and Early Photography
This lecture will cover the origins of photography from the camera Lucida to wet plate collodion. We will talk about why and how photography came to be, and the early innovators who shaped the medium we now know.
Lecture 2: Photography’s two personalities: Fine Art and Popular Medium
This lecture will present the two personalities of photography that evolved in the later half of the 19th century - from the beginnings of the medium’s use as a fine-art medium and the concurrent rise of photography as a popular pastime for the everyman.
Lecture 3: The 20th century and beyond
This lecture will explore and provide context for the various photographic movements that arose in the 20th century, from the Photo Secession through to the f/64 school, post-modernist photography and the rise of digital photography.
About the speaker: Scott Davis is a fine-art photographer from Washington DC who specializes in antique and historic processes, which he teaches at Glen Echo Photoworks in Glen Echo, Maryland. He is also a collector of early photographs and an avid student of photographic history. His work has been published in regional, national, and international publications and exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.
